Tie-Houston hosted a lecture by Emory
University Marketing Professor Jag Sheth on the
emergence of China and India as major economic
superpower.
Dr. Sheth presented a
thought-provoking keynote speech before a sell out crowd
of 250 TiE-Houston members and their guests on December
13, at the elegant Junior League of Houston ballroom in
midtown Houston.
Dr. Sheth – a world renowned expert and on marketing and
strategy wowed the crowd with a compelling, informative
and entertaining presentation as well as a Q&A session
that could have continued on into the night but was
terminated as time ran out. Boasting a most impressive
list of accomplishments and academic achievements,
Professor Sheth taught at the University of Southern
California, University of Illinois, Columbia University,
and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He earned
his MBA (1962) and Ph.D. (1966) from the University of
Pittsburgh, after graduating with high honors from the
University of Madras in 1960.
Dr. Jag Sheth has published more than 200 books and
research papers in different areas of marketing. His
latest book “Tectonic Shift” with Rajendra Sissodia is
“a penetrating analysis on where the future of different
countries is going under the pressure of geo-economic
forces”.
Professor Sheth’s lecture was the last keynote event for
TiE-Houston during 2006, continuing TiE-Houston’s focus
on fostering entrepreneurship through networking,
mentoring, and participation in the local and global
economy.
Tie-Houston President Ashok Rao introduced Dr. Sheth and
announced an interesting slate of speakers for 2007,
beginning with Houston Dynamos President Oliver Luck in
January. In February, Shell President John Huffmeister
will address the TiE group, followed by Continental
Airlines President Larry Kellner in March. Also on TiE’s
dance card are management gurus such as C.K. Prahalad
and leading VCs like Vinod Khosla and Pramod Haque.
Dr. Sheth’s speech was a fascinating blend of mind
numbing data and stitiscal information, prescient
analysis and laid back humor. When the Indian and
Chinese civilizations were at their height, Europe was
in its dark, medieval age and America was a wilderness.
According to “Jag” Sheth, “The 19th century belonged to
Europe. The 20th was an American century. The 21st
century will be the Asian Century with Chindia -- China
and India -- as the superpowers.”
Professor Sheth expects both India and China to become
world economic powers, expanding the current G8 group
into a G10 with China 2nd and India 4th in PPP
(purchasing power parity. “Already, China holds about a
billion in U.S. dollars, wielding considerable balance
of trade and geopolitical influence.”
Today, China and India are major consuming nations,
leading the world in sale of mobile phones, automobiles
and two-wheels, and even beer and cigarettes. Sheth also
expects an Easternization trend in the West, through the
promulgation of fusion concepts such as Christian yoga.
